Project lambs are purchased in December. Our fair is in April, so we try to find fall or late summer born lambs for the project. We do try to show at a few one day lamb shows for practice during the season. Members need to have a place to house the lamb, feed, water buckets, transportation, halters and tackbox supplies. Project meeting are frequent from January - April. Lambs are weighted, medications administered, feeds adjusted, exercise adjusted and showmanship practiced.
Housing in a safe environment is the 1st priority. Shade, clean fresh water daily. Feeding the lamb at the same time everyday is very important. Watching for signs of illness such as diarrhea, not uneaten food, or heavy breathing and droopy ears are maybe the start of an problem. Taking the temperature, normal average 103 degrees, checking the respiration rate and knowing how your lamb acts daily are part of a lamb project members job.
You will learn parts of the your lamb for the project meetings, the herdsman test, livestock judging contests and showmanship in the ring.
